You may have missed this, but VP Kamala Harris graced the cover of Vogue in January of 2021. A new source claims that VP Harris was left "wounded" and feeling belittled after the above cover image which featured her in skinnies and converses was leaked before hitting the stands. This came weeks before President Biden and VP Harris took office and team Harris was not happy as they saw the cover photo as a slight to the VP!
"Would they depict any other world leader in that manner?", Vice president Harris reportedly inquired to an aide.
In an online article in Vogue posted in January of 2021, the photographer, Tyler Mitchel, said that the cover was to pay homage to Vice President Harris' sorority days. And, when Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, got wind of the negative press she defended her decision by saying she only meant for the VP to seem "relatable".
Most recently, "This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America's Future," an upcoming book written by New York Times journalists Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns, dives into the controversy surrounding Harris' Vogue magazine cover. According to the two authors the converse sneakers were a signature look for VP Harris.
To confirm this, in 2018, Kamala bragged about her collection of Chucks to the "The Cut" where she lists her favorite pair, "including a black leather pair, a white pair, the kind that don’t lace, the kind that do lace, the ones she wears in hot weather, the ones she wears in cold weather, and her platforms that go with pantsuits.
As you can see, VP Harris is no stranger to comfy kicks and action pics. So why was The White House so upset about a cover that presented a genuine reflection of the woman she is... or portrays?
Was Vogue being shady by featuring the 1st Black woman to be VP of the United States in skinny Jeans and Chucks? Would Converses be considered an element of the VP's personal brand at this point? And if it is, wouldn't having images that reflect your personal brand be a good thing?
We'd love to hear your opinion! But most importantly, we want to remind you that you get to create a brand that fits you like your favorite little black dress. What you do, say, and wear are just as important to your personal brand as the solutions you provide. Always be mindful of the image you're curating. The world is paying attention.
